On Friday evening we had the good fortune of attending a performance of the Barmer Boys, a Rajasthani folkgroup, at the Indian Embassy. The performers, Mangey Khan (vocals, harmonium), Mangu Khan (dholak), and Rais Khan (Khartaal, pmorchang, bhapang, beat-boxing ) are three of about 20,000 Manganiyers remaining in Western Rajasthan. Though Muslim, they perform a mix of traditional Hindu and Muslim music, as well as more contemporary pieces. The Barmer Boys have gained notable popularity since being discovered in 2010. They have been featured in season 3 of the Coke Studio, and will be opening for the Rolling Stones in a few months. This was the most enjoyable Rajasthani concert I’ve attended since hearing Mukhtiyar Ali a few years ago at a performance in Bangalore.
